China Trip, 2006

Huang Shan - 08/01/06

Our next hotel was located at the top of Huang Shan. After a cable car ride up, we then walked to it. The scenary is simply amazing. I suddenly felt like I was thrown into the setting of a Chinese movie where everyone could fly; you know, like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. After lunch, we took a 9km hike to the highest point and back. No matter where you looked, you were guaranteed a breath-taking view. Whenever we had free time at the hotel, I went to sketch the view from the front in ink. Unfortunately, people noticed me and kept coming over to stare. It was getting annoying since it makes me uncomfortable to have people watch me draw...

Huang Shang - 08/02/06

Of the whole year, you're able to see the sunrise on Huang Shan only about 80 times. The rest of the time, the sun is covered by clouds. At 4:50AM, we set out to see if we could catch one of the 80 times. It was still dark, and we used flashlights to guide us. We made it to the best spot to watch the sunrise and waited. Surely enough, we got lucky. We watched as the blood red sun rose and stayed until it was higher and had changed to orange.

Afterwards, we went down the mountain and drove back to Hangzhou. There we went to the tea plantation for the famous Dragon Well Green Tea, which is also China's national tea.
